QUR'AN REPLIES TO OBJECTIONS

Objection 3: It is on Chapter 9 Verse 23, the translation follows

"O you who have attained to faith, do not take your fathers and your brothers for allies if a denial of the truth is dearer to them than faith: for those of you who ally themselves with them - it is indeed they who are evildoers."

We have repeatedly stressed on the fact that Islam is a way of life proposed by the Creator of all human beings. It has nothing to do with the birth, race, tribe and nation of a person. The above quoted verse itself stand testimony to the fact that Islam means nothing but leading a faithful and honest life as ordained by the Almighty Creator. Now if somebody disobeys the commands of his Master and becomes slave of his own desires, the believers are instructed here not to have an intimate, secret-sharing proximity with him, even if he is a close relative. But as far as normal human affairs or duties are concerned, there shall not be any deviation from the established social norms while dealing with them. For further clarification, please see the Chapter 31 Verse15. This verse enjoins upon the believers to treat their parents as per the established norms even if they are Kafirs (disbelievers) or Mushriks (polytheists). But in the event of war and abnormal conditions, no close association sharing secret information is advised.

Objection 4: It is on Chapter 9 Verse 37, but the whole verse is not taken. Only a part of it is mentioned. So we shall also deal with that part only, the translation follows.

"…… Verily ALLAH does not grace with HIS guidance people who refuse to acknowledge the truth."

Here Almighty GOD informs us that HE does not show the right direction to those who disobey. So every human being must sincerely obey his Master, or HE will not make HIS guidance available to him. What are the Muslims ordered to do in this verse? If any group among the Muslims misuses this simple informative statement as an excuse to take action against others, they need to be educated.

Objection 5: It is on Chapter 5 Verse 57, the translation follows.

"O you have attained to faith, do not make alliance with those who mock at your faith and make a jest of it - be they from the People of Book or from ‘Kuffar’ (deniers of the truth), and remain conscious of ALLAH if you are truly believers. "

Till now it must be crystal clear that this religion is not based on one’s birth. In preceding lines it has been ordained to the believers not to make alliance at the cost of ideology even with parents and close relatives. How can you be in alliance with those who make mockery of the ideology you profess? Is there anything inhuman in this?

The whole confusion arises due to improper translation of the word ‘wali’ or ‘Aulia’.’ We had discussed this Qur’anic term in our earlier articles. It can be checked in any dictionary of Arabic language. Its proper translation is “Allies” or “Alliance”. Its root is (W-L-E) means ‘alliance and attachment’. It cannot be translated as mere ‘friend’ because for friend there are other words in the Qur’an like ‘Sadeeq, Habeeb and Khaleel’. There is no instruction against the normal social relations with non-Muslims. The improper translation might have provided a religious sanction to personal enmity for some narrow-minded or shortsighted individuals or groups. Little did the translators know that it would deepen the communal divide also, which is certainly against the teachings of the Qur’an. The said verse admonishes the believers not to compromise on ideology or religious belief. But an improper and out of context translation leads to bigotry, inflated egoism and superiority complex, instead of cementing social amity and harmony. We shall see whether The Almighty allows it! Not in the original wordings, of course.
