REASEARCH ON SOME QUR'ANIC VERSES ABOUT JIHAD & QITAAL

We have before us a letter from some prominent Muslim scholars of India that contains some questions often raised by the non-Muslims about Islam and Muslims. We are expected to answer them in the light of the Holy Qur’an and the Sunnah (system, style, approach, action, orders) of the Prophet (PBUH). We pray to the LORD of the Worlds to show us the right path. “O our LORD, let us see the Truth as Truth and guide us to follow it. And let us see the falsehood as falsehood and help us to keep away from it. Glory be to YOU, we know not any more than what YOU taught us. Indeed YOU are the WISEST and ALL-KNOWING.”

Q. 1: If Islam is a peaceful and civilizing religion, why does it insult or have contempt for other religions? If it has sublime spiritual and moral values why does it use offensive terms or disparaging remarks for other nations? Does it not amount to hateful approach of one creed for the other?

Ans: If it is true as stated in the question, then it can be said that Islam has its own demerits. But before admitting the charge we need a proper study of the subject whether it is really so. First of all let us consider the following points.

(A) Any fair-minded person will admit that to evaluate any religion, the social character of its followers or their assertion is not the authentic source. Instead there should be an in-depth study of its original sources, scriptures, and the fundamental principles propagated by its prophet or the founder. As Christianity cannot be held responsible for the atrocities of Hitler and Czars of Russia, similarly the erotica at the temples of Khajuraho and Konark are not inspired by the basic teachings of the Hindu Dharma. Nathuram Godse was not inspired by the basic philosophies of the Hindu Dharma when he killed Mahatma Gandhi, the torch-bearer of non-violence. It will be a great injustice to state that basic concepts of these religions are responsible for the abovementioned phenomenon.

(B) Today the Muslims are found in almost every corner of the world. They have distinct life style, native cultures, age-old customs and traditions, indigenous dogmas and rituals, remnants of past beliefs, pride and prejudices, national traits and tendencies. Moreover, the bizarre attitudes and inhuman acts of some Muslim kings and emperors who belonged to different regions and times had their own set of rules, mostly prompted by various political motives. All such practices, of course, cannot be termed as the basic teachings of Islam.

(C) The Holy Qur’an is the prime source of Islam. The Muslims refer to it as “their book”. But in reality, it is not “their book”. It is the Divine Revelation sent down by the Creator of the entire universe including humans who inhabit this world. How the Qur’an, which is the Book of the Creator of humanity can contain derogatory remarks for His creatures? Contrary to this, the Holy Qur’an declares that all the human beings are the off-springs of Adam and Eve. One can see it in chapter 49 verse 13, which is as under:

"O mankind, WE have created you all out of a male and a female, and have made you into nations and tribes, so that you might come to know one another. Verily, the noblest of you in the sight of ALLAH is the one who is most deeply conscious of HIM. Behold, ALLAH is All-knowing, All-aware”.

In fact the Qur’an does not make any discrimination between man and man on any basis. It categorically states that the humanity was once one community. This is simply logical. Then how come the off-springs of a single pair, Adam and Eve, now subscribe to diametrically divergent views? The Qur’an informs us how this happened in the following verse:

"All mankind were once one single community. Then they began to differ whereupon ALLAH raised up the prophets as heralds of glad tidings and as warners, and through them bestowed revelation from on high, setting forth the real truth, so that it might decide between the people with regard to all on which they had come to hold divergent views. Yet none other than the self-same people who had been granted such revelations began, out of mutual jealousy and ego, to disagree about its meaning after all evidence of the truth had come unto them. But ALLAH guided the believers by HIS leave, unto the truth about which, they had disagreed: for ALLAH guides onto a straight way him that wills to be guided”

So the Qur’an informs us that different views, misunderstandings, infighting and violence in the name of religion are all man-made.
