To
put forward the first theory, it has been written:
Say
(O Prophet): "Go all over the earth, and see
what happened in the end to those sinners who lived
before you: most of them were accustomed to ascribe
divine qualities to things or beings other than GOD".
(From
Holy Qur'an 30/42)

The
archeological remains provide us ample evidence that
the multifarious modes of worship, i.e., idol worship,
hero worship or worship of the phenomena, graves,
superstition, the nobility, lust, etc., had been a
common feature in all of them. In order to establish
the above fact, the following verse from Qur'an is
self-explanatory: -
"This
account of the fate of those ancient communities some
of them still remaining, and some extinct like a field
of mown-down WE convey unto you (O Prophet) as a lesson
for mankind. For, no wrong did WE do to them, but
it was they who wronged themselves. And when your
Sustainer's judgment came to pass, those deities of
theirs which they had been used to invoke instead
of GOD proved of no avail whatever to them, and brought
them no more than utter perdition."
(From
Holy Qur'an 11/100,101)

The
peak point reached by the civilizations and the
timing of their imminent destruction is expressed
by the Qur’anic verse referred under. It also
provides us answers to most of the queries pertaining
to the progress made and the apex point reached
by these civilizations: -
"Then,
when they had forgotten all that they had been
told to take to heart, WE threw open to them
the gates of all good things, until even as
they were rejoicing in what they had been granted,
WE suddenly took them to task: and lo! They
were broken in spirit. And in the end, the last
remnant of those folk who had been bent on evil
doing was wiped out..."
(From
Holy Qur'an 6/44,45)
-
The following verse is also worthy
of note and as a reference from Qur'an is the last
one to be quoted here: -
"And
such is your Sustainer's punishing grasp
whenever HE takes to task any civilization
that is given to evil doing; verily HIS
punishing grasp is most grievous and severe!
"
(From
Holy Qur'an 11/102)
